Root Cause: Helpful or Harmful?

People talk a lot about “root cause” in thyroid medicine.

And sometimes I worry that phrase does more harm than good.

Looking for contributing factors is important. Iron deficiency, menopause, coeliac disease, sleep, nutrition, stress, medications. That is good medicine.

What worries me is when people are left feeling that if they just search hard enough, they will find one hidden explanation for why they feel unwell.

Sometimes what matters most is not what caused something 15 years ago.

It is what we can change now.

Curious what you think. Has “root cause” language helped you or made you feel more blamed?
